Thanks, Ed. That may well be the problem. All my audio disappears, so
perhaps Windows is using the Kenwood as the default audio device for
everything.

If there isn't an "always use this device" option, then I may need sighted
assistance to fix this one, as I don't have a USB-based voice synthesizer to
which I can route JAWS temporarily.

Doug,  I am using X P so there may be some differences.  Mine did the same
thing, shutting jaws off.  I had to go into the audio devices section on the
computer and change to  Realtec and then all worked fine.  good luck  73
