You're right about running a long ground, although here is a trick I've 
seen work.  If you have to run a long ground, over a quarter wave and it 
can act like an antenna, do this.  Use a piece of coax for your ground 
wire, just the center conductor.  At each end bypass the center conductor 
to the shield with a .001 cap.  That is the only connection to the shield, 
just a cap on each end.  It really does work and keeps the ground from 
radiating.
