the air comes out the back of the rig so that's maybe why you thought the 
fan was back there...that's also where most of the fan noise comes from as 
the air is being ducted to the rear to flow over the finals and so on.
I think they stuck the fan up front to help reduce heat from the display and 
microprocessors located all around the display and front pannel.
There is a fan mod for the ts2000 where you can put in an after market fan 
that runs much much quieter, as well as adjusting the air duct a bit to 
reduce noise.
Some guys have also replaced a few resisters and basic components to tell 
the fan to come on only when necesary and to run slower when not as much 
cooling is needed.
The TM V7A was awful for fan noise as well...seems like kenwood tends to 
over design the cooling systems in their radios in the hopes that the 
components/finals will last a bit longer compared to other brands that tend 
to over heat and malfunction sooner.
Any electric fan will also get noisier over time as the components and 
lubrication inside the bushings start to decay.  So, with the ts2000, having 
the fan running so much, it'll only get noisier with time...catch 22 really.
apparently installing a new fan is easy as long as you can find a drop in 
replacement.
I wonder why no one in the radio industry has started using liquid cooling 
systems like you find on high speed processor computers.
Seems like it would be ultra quiet and more efficient for components that go 
from cold to hot and back on a regular basses like finals do.
