Steve and all:
Fan noise is basically the only complaint I have had about either of my
TS480's.
The fan noise in them reminds me of the Ic706, which, in my view, also has
an unusually loud fan.
When I get my 590, which hopefully will be soon if the deal I'm working on
holds, I'm sure looking forward to a quieter rig in the shack.

Bob,
You are right about the difference in the fan activity between the 2000
and 590. When I got my 2000 ten years ago, the amount of fan activity
and fan noise was one of the first things I noticed.
According to the 590's In Depth Manual (which is on the Kenwood site),
they designed the radio for better cooling. Instead of the single fan
on the rear panel of the 2000, there are 2 smaller fans running at lower
speed placed at the front of the 590. Supposed to cool better at lower
speed/noise.
I'm enjoying mine and hope I get a decade of good use out of it as I
did the 2000.
