    Richard and all:

Interestingly, I used some canned air on the unit late this afternoon, and 
the volume control  actually seemed to work a little better again.  However, 
it's not perfect, and I probably will end up sending it in at some point, 
since they do seem willing to service the unit.

I just have to pick a time when doing so will be the least inconvenient and 
disruptive.

If ldg is willing to service the unit that would be my way to go.  It
make take some time but certainly the safest approach.  The time will
certainly come when they aren't servicing them and that may be the point
at which you have to get more adventurous.
