Diane,
You can insert a file into a document in Word 2007 and above by holding
down alt and typing the key sequence n, j, f (for Insert, Object, and
File). When you do this, the Open dialog comes up. Arrow to and press
enter on your file as usual. The new file is inserted at the cursor
location.
If you want the files to have the same formatting, One way to do it is
to go into File>Options>Advanced and work with the options that say
things like, "When cutting and pasting, keep text only." Advanced has
lots and lots of options. These items are in the Cut and Paste grouping.
Another way to do it is to highlight the entire document, copy it to the
clipboard, paste it into a blank document using Paste Special
(alt+ctrl+v) and Unformatted text, which is one of the choices.
Sometimes you need to go into font to choose a font and to clear
formatting. Doing this is a lot less painstaking than using the Jaws
analyzer, which doesn't always give helpful information.
About hearing the word "Catalan," the only thing that comes to mind is
that this is a language tag. If the document was created while Word was
set to a different proofing language, Jaws announces the language of the
document. Jaws also sometimes announces the language if your system is
set to a different language.
You might try setting the language of the document to English. Open the
rtf document. Use ctrl+a to select all of the text. Go into Review, then
into Language. I don't remember if Word 2007 is the same or different
from Word 2010. In 2010, there are two items that say Language. The
second one is the one that allows you to set the proofing language.
Press enter on that item. Then select English U.S. from the drop down
list, pressing enter on OK when you're done. That should change the
language of the document to English, so Jaws should stop telling you
it's Catalan.
Hope this helps.
ciao
