I had a bout with a modem going south a while back. Some messages would 
download, the modem would crash, I'd get it restarted and all the 
previous messages would be downloaded again. The problem was that T-bird 
wasn't given a chance to mark the messages on the server as having been 
downloaded already, also known as synchronizing between computer and 
server. Make sure you don't shut T-bird down too soon after or during 
downloading messages. There are a couple add-ons that are supposed to 
help you get rid of duplicates.
