Hi Mike,
Mr. Mazri's converter is certainly an alternative, however, what I would
like to do, if I can, is to find a slim pdf doc reader that will simply
let me open the doc, read it and put it away again without converting
anything.

Another alternative is Jamal Mazrui's pdf2txt available from his
empowermentzone.com website
www.empowermentzone.com.
I use this program, along with Adobe 9 and K1000, to do my conversions.
Sometimes, one gives more readable results than another; and you have to
learn which one works better for a given situation.
