Here are the responses I received after my post about Silk Almond milk.
I called because I had never used their almond milk and I needed to know if the PureAlmond (original) flavor was gluten free. The packaging says it is lactose free but doesn't mention if it is gluten free. She assured me it was because they don't use any ingredients that contain gluten. Then why, I asked, can't gluten free be printed on the label? Her answer was that the US Government doesn't require a label for gluten free but it does for lactose free products. I was astounded! It seems to me that gluten is more of a health concern than being lactose intolerant. I asked if it would be possible to pass along to their marketing people that celiacs want and need to see gluten free printed on packaged products that manufacturers know don't contain gluten.
Thanks to all.

1. I agree with you - gluten sources should be on the food / drug labels. The US
government, like the Canadian government, have been "revising" the allergen
labeling for several years now. In the US the regulations were suppose to
be enforced in August 2008 I think it was - they have been delayed while the
government does some more studying of the matter. In Canada it is the beer
industry that has put a delay on our regulations getting passed. Seems we
need big industry to get the government to stand up and take notice.

2. There are products that say "gluten free" and also say "manufactured in a facility that produces wheat." It's all a mind game!

3. If you ever get a Wegmans grocery store built near you, run to it. They have their own private label yogurt, and other products marked with a "G" on it for gluten-free. Their food is amazing good, lowfat, low sugar, low salt, low cholesterol. They are a dream! The best organic produce. It's some place to look for in your travels.

4. Maybe they think it is enough; a lot of lactose intolerant people are also gluten intolerant?
There is a lot of ignorance in the non-celiac community. There is no legal standard either,
so they are covering their backsides maybe?

5. I also have a casein intolerance that is more life threatening than the gluten intolerance as it causes respiratory spasms and swelling for me that causes my entire respiratory system to swell within minutes. For me, having lactose/diary free on the label is equally important.
It would be reassuring to have gluten free on the labels!!
