Don,

I have 2 amps in the shack, a AL-80 B tube amp, and a Tokyo Hi Power HL
1.2KFX solid state. I think all ss amps are easy to use by blind ops.
At the very least you just set the band switch and operate. Other units
offer auto band switching, where the amp follows the transmitter as you
change bands.

Watt for watt they are more expensive than tube amps, but both have
their good points. With some sort of tuning aid, a tube amp is no
problem to operate, and a tube amp is more forgiving of high swr.

Since you are running a G5RV, remember that you will also need an
external tuner that will handle the power output from your amp.
Solid state amps are pickey about swr and will trip out at swr of 1.8
or 2.0 depending on model. This is to protect the final transistors.
The G5RV needs a tuner, and the internal tuner in the rig is of no
use when using an amp.
BTW, someone on this list was offering for sale an Icom 500 watt SS
amp a few weeks ago. I also know others on this list are using SS amps
from MFJ, THP, SGC, Metron, and maybe a few others.

73, good luck, Steve KW3A
