Richard:
I'd recommend an Icom 718 HF transceiver.
I owned and used one for a number of years, and loved it.
I believe the cost new is around $500 or so with the UT102 speech chip, and
the rig covers 10 through 160 meters.
If you can afford some extra filters, it can be a great CW rig.
As an SSB rig, it is very versatile, and has good transmit audio.
I did a review of the rig for Handihams a number of years ago, and will be
happy to send it to you privately if you'd like.

Subject: Least Expensive Way To Go HF
What are the thoughts of those on this list on the least expensive way
to get on the HF bands with a multiband radio? Where should I start? As
I have said, I really have no idea what's out there these days and I
really don't know where to begin my search. I believe the antenna
situation can be handled by the local group if I can find a radio. I
might even have computer stuff to trade for a radio if anyone does that
kind of thing.
