I don't see the original message being replied to attached below, so I'm 
sorry if I'm guessing a bit at the question that's being answered.

You can install applications to and run them from an external hard 
drive. One issue you could run into is that the hard drive letter may 
change, but you can have a hard drive always use the same drive letter 
(assuming no one else is using it). I know it can be done, but I'll have 
to check later on exactly how. I think you can do this with the disk 
management software that comes with Windows.

Most applications also use the Windows registry to store information 
about the application, so you couldn't install an application on the 
external drive while it's attached to one PC and then try to run it 
while it was attached to another PC. There are portable applications or 
applications that don't use the registry that will let you do this 
however. These portable applications are often installed to flash drives 
so you can pick them up and run them on any PC. Note that this also gets 
around the changing hard drive issue.
