Mag,

I love Amber's dog - she is Pomeranian. Adorable, small, quiet, well
behaved and wasn't a jumpy puppy. She makes a great lap dog, barks only
when someone is at the door, although she sits up alertly whenever
someone walks by the house. She does need to be brushed tho - but that
part of the whole sitting in the lap thing. She is roughly 6.5 pounds
and jumps just fine. And she is fine around my cats. Most of what you
want are thing one would train the dog for anyway. Do not get a
Dachshund - they are insanely active. I had a Chihuahua before this and
she was equally nice to my Pom. If you raise them gently and in a calm
environment - and chose a calmer breed or puppy - it should be fine. You
want to raise them - that's how you get them trained - Bob trained our
Chihuahua not bark because he carried her around and was her example.
She patterned after him - since he didn't bark - so she didn't bark.
Basically that's what I did with the Pom.

             Hugs - Trisha

Mag,

I know you want a smaller, lower maintenance dog so I won't strongly
recommend what I've got. He's a chow/lab cross, and the best dog I've
ever
seen, bar none (spoken like a true proud puppy papa). He sheds like
crazy
though, and weighs 75 pounds.

You might want to consider a poodle/beagle cross. When I was in high
school, the second best dog I've ever known was a beagle/husky cross
with a
wonderful temperament. She shed quite a bit, so that's why I'm
recommending
a poodle cross. The beagle made her smaller and thinner, so a cross
with a
poodle might fill your needs well.

An unreasonable man (but my wife says that's redundant!)

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one
persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all
progress
depends on the unreasonable man.
