My husband and I are writing a book about our house, but really more about the "geneology" of our house, tracing it back to sources of design and fabrication. So, from time to time, I may post a question to this worldly and wise group for comment and insight.

Question of the day: does anyone know of a specific source of Ionic columns and their lovely scrolled capitals, someone or place that was making them in the 1800s before the Civil War? Our house has four, and we can't imagine that they were made in Ann Arbor, but we haven't been able to find a source anywhere else, either. I'm thinking upstate New York, since the original owner migrated west from there and likely brought with him his elitist eastern ideas. I'd attach a photo, but that is not allowed, per the rules of BP, so just imagine the Temple of Athena Nike on the Acropolis, and you'll be close. They're 22 feet tall and have entasis, and all parts are carved out of Michigan white pine.

Any thoughts?
