Based on recent comments, I think I'll go back to my novice days running the DX20, 100 foot long wire, and the BC348 receiver I got for 20 bucks.  I worked 41 states in 7 months as a novice on 8 and 40 only.  My receiver didn't cover 15 meters.  Talk about the basics and fun?  Man, I had fun like you can't believe.  Made a lot of on air friends, too.
