The reason for all those diodes in series is to create a "diode" with high PIV but low shunt capacitance. I did consider a power switch but couldn't figure out how to protect the circuit from accidental high power. Contrary to how an SWR meter gets its voltage to deflect a meter or control a VCO, we're accessing voltage on the feedline directly, and that voltage can become very high.
