hey all:
Ok, I'm looking at possibly putting up an off center fed windom style wire
antenna.
My yard, support points, and some other factors lead me down the path of an
off center fed type of arrangement.
I'm looking at the maple leaf studio's windom good from 80 through 6M.
It's 44FT on one leg, and 88FT on the other. It uses a 4 to 1 current
ballun.
Has anyone used this particular brand, the maple leaf studio's antenna
specifically?
And, any comments on the performance and over all results of a windom or off
center fed wire are welcome. My land lord is a ham, so he's willing to let
me try to get as much wire up as the 3 properties along the block that he
owns will allow. I'm on one end of those 3, so we can get up to 99 feet in
one direction, and probably 60 to 70 feet at a right angle to that.
I figure the 88FT leg will fit well into the east west run, and the 44 foot
leg will fit nicely into the north south side yard area of my own property.
I guess I am wondering if anyone can speak to how well an off center wire,
like the windom, performs when configured into an L shape like that...where
the two legs are at a horrizontal 90 degree angle to each other?
I can likely configure it so that the angle at the feed point isn't quite as
sharp, but it'll still be in an L shape even if I soften the feed point
angle.
Or, would a G5RV be a better suggestion? I can put one of the 102 foot
varieties up as an inverted V running north south from the front to the back
of my property. Unfortunately, I'd have to run the latter line of a G5RV
down at least 30FT of metal push up...but perhaps plastic stand offs could
be designed and attached to keep the feedline away from the pipe.
However, my thinking is, that the more wire I can get up, the better success
I'll have on 80 and 75 meters, which is kind of the whole point here.
I can put up multiple mono band dipoles without trouble in the space I have,
but I want to get something up that will work well on 80, but also be
multi-banded, but not more than say 132 feet long.
With the ability to go across 3 city lots on one leg, I've got plenty of
room, but I know a regular center fed dipole really doesn't like a
horrizontal L configuration. Unfortunately, I can't stick my feed point out
in the middle of that 99FT east west run, it has to be on my end of the leg.
I can put a feed point anywhere along the 70FT north south leg though.
hope all that makes sence.
