Here is an update with a work around solution for this problem....

I accept no liability for this work around. If you do it, you do it at your
own risk........ It might not work in your case. This is for the Kenwood
TS-2000
and the MFJ-998 only..

I disconnected the cable interface between the radio and the tuner,
completely removing the MFJ-5114K cable. All other connections remain the
same between
the Radio-Amp-Tuner (per the manuals). I have placed a 10K ohm resistor
between the two middle pins on the radio external tuner connector. (The 10K
resistor
allows the radio to bypass the internal tuner when the tune button is pushed
on the radio) Again, no connection at all to the MFJ ethernet connection.
The two middle pins allow the radio, when the AT button is pushed to disable
the internal Kenwood tuner and place the radio in CW mode with a 10W
carrier.
Of course this is enough to excite the MFJ tuner and the MFJ tunes the
frequency. Once tuned you must push the AT button again to take the radio
out of
the tune mode.

This work-around is nearly automatic. I am only having to push the Kenwood
AT button once to start the tune cycle on the MFJ and once to put the radio
back to its orignal mode ready for transmission. Pretty slick I think. Since
I can't get the radio and the tuner to communicate this is a nice work
around.

I am happy enough that I am going to keep the tuner.

By the way, MFJ did send me a new tuner and it too did not work in the
automatic mode per the other post in this chain of notes. I do want to thank
MFJ
though for being willing to try to help me with this problem, they went
above and beyond what would be expected and I don't really think at this
point
the problem is the MFJ-998 tuner. I must have a problem with my radio
somehow.
