I wound the coax into a coil, probably about 4 inches in diameter, and 
consisting of about 10 or 12 turns.

Did you actually wind the extra coax into a choke coil? Or  just insert
the extra coax in an effort to change the overall feedline length?   Not
clear from what you wrote.
