I can recall sun spot cycles when the bands were so crowded with loud DX, that some, even commonly worked DX stations, were operating split on 20 and 15 and 10 meters right during the contest.  That is, they would listen up 1 and 2 KHz because the pile ups were so huge.  Sure was fun.
