Yeah, I hear what you are saying, but I think Howard is right;  the TS480 
auto-tuner seems to be unusually forgiving, but like you, I won't operate on 
an antenna with an SWR of greater than 3 to 1, if I can help it.

And, a manual tuner does come in handy in those rare situations where the 
auto-tuner just can't cut it.

the auto tuner in a radio can't be used with an amp anyway, it would have no
effect what so ever. The amp would still have the nice mismatch. I've never
heard of an internal tuner, especially the relay ones that would tune
anything higher than 3:1 so if you want to tune something higher than that
you probably want something external but I'd tent to opt for an antenna
that's under 3:1 on the bands you use.
