+1 to Michael's comment on electricity. Same goes for cordless phones.
Keep an old wired phone around the house that will still work on 40V twisted
pair phone lines even if the power goes out. Telephone lines are a lot
harder to taske out than electrical lines. Also, if you have a cell phone,
make sure you buy a 12V car charger. You might have cell phone service in a
blackout, but it won't do you any good if the battery's dead :-(
