Hi Chad,
     Hey, I understand about being out of the ham radio game for a while. 
Smile. On a 5/8  wave, they work the best against a quarter wave ground 
plain. So, if one is able to connect a quarter wave to the ground shield as 
close as possible to the antenna the performance increases dramatically. It 
helps both the transmit and receive. For some reason I can not explain 
physically connecting the ground plain wire to the ground shield works much 
better then connecting the mag mount to a big metal ground plain. This is 
just my experience.
