Right you are, and yes, indeed, it's the venerable a550n as you surmised.
Subsequent to my previous post, we did get those drivers installed; 
unfortunately it didn't resolve the problem.
So tomorrow morning, unless some strange occurrence happens fixing it, it 
goes to a shop where accomputer tech guy can figure out what needs 
tweeking to turn this a550n into an internet pc again.
