In addition to the suggestions others have made, you can try searching
for the message with your email reader's Find Message command. I
sometimes locate stray messages this way because they don't go to the
bottom of the folder,etc.
The only other thing I can say is that every once in a while certain
email accounts just don't get along. when I teach, I collect my homework
by email. In the last few years, my students and I have been required to
use our institution's email accounts, so things mostly go smoothely, but
when we all used our personal accounts, I noticed that I had trouble
with messages from some students. What I think I remember is that I
tended to have trouble with Yahoo and Hotmail accounts, but the weird
thing was that I only had trouble with certain accounts, one or two
students per semester, and the problems weren't consistent. I'd
eventually get the original message, a month or two later.
