Danny,

I think that depends a lot on your receiver.  Using the Elecraft KX1, I had 
little trouble tuning by the receiver noise.  With my IC718, it was more 
difficult.

The KX1 has a built-in cw readout for the internal swr meter, so I could get 
close with receiver noise, then fine tune with the swr meter. 
Unfortunately, the KX1 readout does not provide a steady tone for tuning, so 
I had to make small adjustments and key the rig frequently, until I was 
satisfied.

Hi Gale, thanks for the note and observations.  Question, on the mfj you
have, is the max noise spot audible enough for you to pretty much get it
