Butch,
You've got the price right, as well as your basic understanding of what the
device does. Check with your friend, but from what I read in the QST
article, the device can work with other radios besides the 480, but you'll
have to set up your own interface to do it. The 480 just happens to be a
very convenient radio to use because of the way it was designed.
