All verticals work better the higher off the ground they are. I've used
verticals ground mounted with thousands of feet of wire buried under the
base and it worked well but still not as well as my old R7 mounted on a 3
foot tripod on my roof. So the bottom of the vertical is about 20 feet
above ground. It only uses a half a dozen small radials poked out of the
base but it radiates extremely well on all bands.
