I doubt it, I use Jaws and XP and am not experiencing the notepad issue.  I 
just installed 16 updates last Thursday, some of them were likely the 
updates you referenced.  I do not use Windows Live Mail but I checked on my 
XYL's Win 7 machine with Jaws latest update, and it appears to still work. 
(It still has some idiosyncracies seemingly inherent to Windows Live and 
screen readers).

But, if it just started happening, a system restore as Howard suggests could 
be a solution.  It may have been caused either by an update or some 
mysterious setting change in your system.
