My first step will be to check what firmware version I have.
I do have the radio control program from the Kenwood web site, and just have
to figure out where and how to store my current memories, menu parameters,
etc. in there so that if disaster strikes, I'm not totally dead in the
water.
I'll proceed carefullly, for sure.

Tom,
While I can't answer all your questions, i would suggest you go back to
the Kenwood download page and get the free radio control program for the
480. Save the radio data to the computer, then when you update
firmware, or have some disaster or screw up, you can just reload all
settings from the computer back to the radio.
I would also confirm your current firmware version and see if later
versions offer anything worthwhile. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
