Harvey,

You don't print out the file.  You print it to a "virtual" printer.

It mimics the process of placing the pages on the scanner.

You are correct, it may have some recognition errors, especially if there 
are quite a few pictures and graphics.  But, it does afford a way to get at 
the .pdf images.
