Tom, you are at 600 feet above sea level, rather than 6000 feet.  The air is 
thicker down here.  That makes sound travel better, hence forth the hum is 
louder.

See if pressing on the cover makes a difference.  If so, tighten the outside 
screws, fill the shelves, or put it on the floor out of the way.
