I had reported finding atext only map driving directions page.  Someone 
suggested seeing if the below has a mobile version:

http://yellowpages.superpages.com/directions.jsp

It does and is the very essence of simplicity.  It works on phones too.

The first two links are labled "change".  Choose the first and when that 
page comes up it is on a text entry field.  Put in starting city or zip. 
When hitting the go link it takes you back to the first page.  Choose the 
second link and repeat for the destination zip or city.  Then choosing 
search on the first page provides the travel info desired.
