Here are a couple of random thoughts and responses.

First, I doubt HP systems will be orphaned. HP is the world's largest
makers of PC's, so this business will be sold to another company or spun
off as a standalone business. Think of IBM's PC business and Lenovo. As
Michael Dell said, maybe this new company will be called Compaq! Prices
may dip, but I wouldn't expect a fire sale.

I'm not sure what was meant by "all of there pc's are priority and only
their parts work , and as times goes on who avaiable will these be."
Maybe they meant to say that HP systems are proprietary? If so, I don't
think they're any more proprietary than systems from Dell, Gateway,
Lenovo or the other PC makers. I'm sure they all use the same set of
ODM's. You won't have a problem adding hard drives, sound cards, video
cards and so on to an HP system.

As far as whether to go with a laptop or a desktop, I'd say that depends
on how you'll use the system. If you're talking about replacing your
system every four or five years, most laptops will last that long. If
you're really going to be knocking it around then you'll want a tougher
laptop like a Lenovo thinkpad. If it's going to be stationary then a
desktop system will work and will have some advantages, such as more
storage capacity and the ability to add things like sound cards and
video cards. You can do this with laptops using USB attached devices,
but with a desktop system you can actually install an internal card.

As far as 32-bit versus 64-bit, the only 32-bit systems out there are
the netbooks and the tablets, and even these are going away as you're
getting 64-bit chips now dedicated to run on these smaller devices. Even
ARM processors will be 64-bit before too long.

If I were looking for a system to replace the system Becky has, I'd go
with an I5 processor, 4G of memory and at least a 500G hard drive. I'd
get Windows 7 Home edition (64-bit of course) or whatever it's called,
assuming she doesn't want to go with a Mac. Sounds like she's looking
for a desktop system. I haven't priced these myself, but I would guess
you could get one for around $500 or $600.
