If you can eat pineapple, you don't have a problem with bromelain.
It's an enzyme in pineapple that actually helps you digest food, as
it assists in the breakdown.
I attempted to take bromelain about a year after my celiac diagnosis,
and I had a terrible reaction to it, diarrhea and stomach cramps. Your
post is the first I'd heard of difficulty handling bromelain if you
have a wheat (etc.) allergy.
I take Bromelain for food allergies. It contains pineapple which acts as
a great enzyme to digest food, and is naturally an antihistamine. Other
natural antihistamines are Vitamin C and Quercetin.
I am a celiac and am taking Bromelain right now that was prescribed by
my ND for inflammation, some of which is the sinuses. I read the same
info as you but the one I was prescribed is by Thorne Reseach and
is ok as far as ingredients. I did not call the company. It is labelled
hypallegenic and is made in the USA so the wheat labelling laws would
apply. I found it helped a lot in clearing my head after aboout 4
or 5 days. I've been taking it for about 10 days now but don't
know how long I will take it. My ND will tell me or I will intuitively
know ( I often unconsciously stop taking a supplement when my
body doesn't need it any longer). As to the
rest of your questions, I cannot say. It is important to take
it 15 min before food or at least 1 hr after so it acts on the
inflammation and not as a digestive aid.
I take bromelain on a daily basis and have never reacted badly to it. I
take it for a different reason (joints) but bromelain is bromelain. I
take now bromelain natural enzyme and it Specifically states on the
bottle that it contains no sugar, salt, yeast, wheat, gluten, soy, milk,
egg, shellfish, or preservatives. I have also taken source naturals
bromelain with no reaction, though their container doesn't state its
gluten free.
My reaction to bromelain is a migraine. Also plugged up
sinuses. I use Quercetin for sinus instead and it works well
for me.
I removed all dairy, ie: Casein and all of my sinus problems
went away!
