I'm not against telethons per se, I've never seen a US version, but I think 
the BBC does it rather well. They have an annual "Children in Need" which 
focusses on UK children's charities, and an even more successful, every 
two years, "Comic Relief", which covers worldwide charities.

Of course, as a good socialist I have to be in favour of redistribution of 
wealth. :-)
