Subject: NIH Neuroscience Seminar Series: June 7, 2010

You are invited to attend the NIH Neuroscience Series lecture on June 7,
2010 at noon in the Lipsett Amphitheater of the NIH Clinical Center, 10
Center Drive, Bethesda, MD.

RAIMUND DUTZLER, PH.D., Department of Biochemistry, University of Zurich,
Switzerland, will present the seminar on "A prokaryotic perspective on
pentameric ligand gated ion channel structure and function"

Dr. Dutzler's research group is interested in the mechanisms of
transmembrane ion transport. The group takes a multidisciplinary approach
combining biochemistry X-ray crystallography and electrophysiology to study
the structure and function of ion channels and ion transporters. Dr. Dutzler
has solved original x-ray structures of bacterial homologs of several
important transporter classes, including the ClC family of chloride channels
and transporters and the cys-loop family of neurotransmitter receptors.
These structures have yielded important mechanistic insights into both
classes of proteins. In addition, Dr. Dutzler's group has used novel
combinations of structural and biochemical approaches to obtain functional
information regarding these transport proteins.
