I didn't see what you're replying to, but assuming you're talking about the
search bar, I didn't see a way to disable that in IE8. I'm not saying there
isn't a way to disable it, I just couldn't find one.

As an aside, I used to feel the same way you do about just going to
google.com, but after I got used to using the search bar, that's pretty much
the way I do it now. If IE is open, F6 to go to the address bar and then tab
twice to the search bar. That's easier for me than typing google.com or
looking for Google in my favorites list. It looks like you can also just use
the address bar as well. That would save me a few strikes of the tab key.
There's also Google Desktop, which I haven't gotten into the habit of using,
but tapping the control key twice from anywhere will bring up a search
dialog.

Is there any way to disable this all search provider thing completely?  
When I want to do a search, I just type www.google.com and get there.
