For tom:
I would recommend putting up a doublet as long as possible feed it with
ladder line to the outside of the house, then afix a balun and take coax
into the tuner.
Power will not be a problem, if you use a decent size line, 14 or 16 gauge
should work nicely, and with a good tuner, you can work at least 80 through
10, and maybe 160 depending on antenna length.
Don't forget, you can add your own home brew coils at each end of the
antenna.
I have a similar arrangement, and work anywhere I want to go.
As for directionality, depends on hight above ground.
Probably won't matter much for fourty or below, as to get a quarter wave
above ground for 40 is about 34 feet, and for 80 twice that.
Anything below that hight will be non-directional due to ground and other
structure effects.
I'd say, go to home depot, buy a 500 foot roll of #14 stranded house wire,
and string up as much as you can get.
