One other thing you might want to do is to attend what is called the Keys to 
the convention.  I believe this was formerly known as the first timers 
seminar.  It will be held on both Saturday and Sunday, and it may give you 
pointers as to how to get more out of the convention.  I wouldn't say it is 
essential to go, but it might help you.
