Walt,

Sounds to me like the automatic shut-off alarm.  When the radio has been on 
for half an hour with no activity, it sounds those beeps to let you know 
it's about to shut itself off.  If you hit any button on the radio before it 
shuts off the timer resets to 30 minutes again.  I believe you can change 
that in the menus.  It's designed to prevent your battery from running down 
in the event you forget the rig is on.  That's easy to do since its 
squelched and quiet if there is no activity on your frequency.  Lou
