I think what happens with a lot of people (myself included) is the fat is initially reduced, but replaced temporarily with fluids (for whatever reason). During that period there is no sign of weght loss. Then, one day, the body adjusts itself and - boom - sudden apparent weight loss. You may actually be losing 1/4 lb per day, but it doesn't register until you experience that "Wow, lost 2 lbs overnight" moment.
It's also why a lot of the "fad" diets get their fans claiming spectacular results even though the numbers really don't add up.
