You are forgetting something very basic here.  In today's pc world, a 80gb 
drive is small so you are not likely doing anything wrong.
As this is a laptop, it probably isn't practical to routinely use it with 
an external drive attached.
As it is an older laptop and laptop life cycles are not all that long, it 
is probably time to think about retiring that pc and getting one with a hd 
more consistent with today's hungry programs and files.
Keep in mind that all of these things, over the years, take up greater 
chunks of space.
