Thanks Peter. I tried running device manager and then doing a scan for new 
hardware but it didn't find the drive. I've also updated the BIOS, 
uninstalled and reinstalled the drive and that didn't help. My setup is dual 
boot With Vista Home Premium and I checked and found it is now doing the 
same thing with Vista. I tried using Hibernate rather than Sleep but it also 
didn't help.

I'm not sure what you mean by " try going to drive manager and assign a 
specific drive letter to the external drive".
When the drive is recognized it is Drive K:, when it is not recognized you 
can't see it in Device/Dive Manager!

It was working properly up until just a few days ago. I search on Google 
shows many others having similar problems but I haven't researched it enough 
to find a solutuion.
