Just been out in the woodlot harvesting chantarel mushrooms for dinner and noticed that the places where the canopy was open enough to let in a shaft of light a foot or so wide was very active with flittering insects. Getting close enough allowed me to see that they were swarms of Red Admiral butterflies getting their last warmup before sunset. When they lit on the forest floor they made a dazzling display of red, white and black four petalled flowers. Without notice they would flit up into a swarm as if needing to find a preferable spot and then light again.

Let's hope whoever is in charge of preserving that environment which was built before we arrived ensures our children's children's children get to enjoy that wonder when they go out hunting mushrooms. Come to think of it, that may be us.
