*Obama Insults Special Olympics Athletes *

This excerpt from MSNBC (March 20, 2009) provides a brief summary of the
offending remark.

*Obama 'stunned' by millions in AIG bonuses*
*President promises on 'Tonight Show' to get payments back*
By Savannah Guthrie and Alex Johnson
...
*Presidential Gaffe?*
... in attempting to make a joke about the White House bowling alley, the
president may have made a serious misstep.

Telling Leno that he had not removed the alley, Obama said he had recently
recorded a 129 game...

...Then he added: "It was like Special Olympics or something," a reference
to the athletic festival held every two years for people with mental
disabilities...

*Comment on the JFActivist Blog:* How did Obama's comment make you feel? How
would you like to proceed? What can he and the administration do to repair
the damage? What did this thoughtless and insulting remark mean to you? Is
this indicative of a larger issue of our societies insensitivity and how do
we combat that?

*ACTION ALERT:** Community Choice Act Reintroduced **TUESDAY*

** * * Action Alert * * **

*The March 24th Community Choice Act Kick Off Event is FINALLY ALL SET!*

ADAPT will once again be hosting a kick-off event on Capitol Hill on March
24, 2009. Joining us will be the main sponsors of the bill, Rep. Danny
Davis and Sen. Tom Harkin, along with representatives of major disability
organizations.

The time is* 2:30 Eastern, 1:30 Central, 12:30 Mountain, and 11:30 Pacific*

*Be a part of history and participate with advocates from all over the
country in showing support for the re-introduction of the Community Choice
Act!*

All you have to do is get at least 15 people together around a speaker phone
and we will give you a phone call-in number. Last time we did this, over
10,000 people participated from 42 states and territories. This time, in
the 111th Congress, in the Congress that will finally pass our bill, let's
get 50,000 people from every state and territory.

So gather folks together a half hour ahead and write letters to your Reps
and Senators (see the letter template below). Have some cake and eat it too!

*>>> For a sample letter go to the JFActivist

*Poll Shows Majority Fail to See Offense in Obama's "Joke"*

Further evidence of why a PUBLIC response by the White House is necessary--a
Huffington Post online poll reports that at least 54% of readers thought
should not be taken as offensive. (I'm not exactly sure how to interpret
the "Why are we even talking about this" category.)

Clearly we have a long way to go toward sensitizing the public to the
offensiveness of derogatory and belittling words and attitudes.

Online Poll Results from the Huffington Post (March 19, 2009):

*Obama's joke about the Special Olympics was...*

   - Just a light-hearted, self-deprecating comment. Get over it people.
   *27.47%*
   - Maybe a dumb thing to say, but he didn't mean it in a mean-spirited
way, and it is pretty funny. * 26.11%*
   - A tasteless comment that he should not have said, period. *24.83%*
   - Why are we even talking about this? * 21.59%*

:* How would you vote in this poll? Are these public reactions surprising
to you? How would you interpret the "Why are we even talking about this?"
response? What are some strategies for increasing public awareness about
offensive language and attitudes? Do we need to sensitize the public or do
you think they are sensitive enough? When is a joke "just a joke?" Is it
ever?

*Obama Speaks about Inclusive Employment *

Excerpts from the LA Times (3/19/09):

*Text of Obama's LA town hall meeting*
on the Top of the Ticket blog

*QUESTION: * I'm Gary Carr (Karp),... Sir, my question regards the true
renaissance that's happening with people with disabilities. They are an
emerging population - millions of people with more potential in capacity,
more mobile, more educated, more healthy, more empowered technology, but
still trapped in very, very old social models that see them in terms of
tragedy and charity and need and care...
...we're going to need every single person of capacity to work that we can.
And that must include many, many, many thousands, if not millions, of people
with disabilities.... can you talk about how your disability agenda will
release this emerging potential that's currently wasted and untapped?
*THE PRESIDENT: *Well, you are exactly right, that we need everybody. And
every program that we have has to be thinking on the front end, how do we
make sure that it is inclusive, and building into it our ability to draw on
the capacities of persons with disabilities.

That's true on the education front, where our recovery package increases
funding for children with disabilities. It is true in terms of how Hilda
Solis, our Secretary of Labor, will be thinking about our training programs,
to make sure that we are not excluding from training for high-tech jobs, the
new jobs of the future, persons with disability.

It means enforcing the ADA and fighting back on some court opinions that
have tried to narrow in ways that I think are inappropriate the original
intent of that legislation.

So one of the things that I think is important is to make sure, as you
pointed out, that we don't see this as an afterthought, a segregated
program, but we are infusing every department, every agency, every act that
we take with a mindfulness about the importance of persons with
disabilities, their skills, their talents, their capacity...

An unreasonable man (but my wife says that's redundant!)

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one
persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress
depends on the unreasonable man.
