Just a question - have any of you been diagnosed with colagenous colitis
(another auto-immune condition) after suffering through a gluten ingestion?
On Oct. 21, my husband and I ate dinner at a Mexican restaurant in Mesa,
AZ (where we are spending the winter). I ate cheese enchiladas, which have
been a mainstay for me since I was diagnosed 14 years ago. After having
eaten probably hundreds of cheese enchiladas at restaurants in every state
west of the Mississippi, with never a problem, I woke up on Oct. 22 very, very
sick. Every sign of gluten ingestion, but where? Called the Mexican
restaurant. Turns out they put flour in their enchilada sauce to thicken it -
I'd never heard of that - and no one I've talked to since then has either.
But, the upshot of this is that I didn't get well. I was still sick three
months later - don't flame me - I was so sick I couldn't figure out how to
get to a doctor's office. I finally was able to get my self together and
saw Dr. Michael Mills in Phoenix - very good gastroenterologist. A week
ago he did an endoscopy and colonoscopy with biopsies. Told me this past
Thursday that I had colagenous colitis and would call in a prescription for me
- said I could probably manage the condition with a few diet changes -
yikes! more diet changes? - and medication. Unfortunately, the prescription
he called in for me was for the generic form of Entocort. And even with the
generic and some help from my insurance, a 90 day prescription was going
to cost me two thousand dollars. The prescription didn't get filled - I
don't have two thousand dollars and if this was going to be a lifetime thing,
we'd be talking eight thosand dollars a year - no way when you're living
mostly on Social Security. So bottom line to his too long email is - does
anyone else out there have this colagenous colitis and how do you manage it.
I would appreciate any help I can get. I will summarize.
Thanks,
Karen in Mesa, AZ
