I wish too that you could be steadily happy.  I think sometimes we have to 
decide what we're willing to put up with.  Maybe you think differently, but 
right now, I'd prefer to be less emotional and less caring, than to suffer 
emotional pain.  Caring for others doesn't always start with how we feel.
