The parts may not be, but the firmware probably is protected. I ran
into a similar situation years ago whan a e s quit making their talking
frequency counter. They sold it for over $200 as I recall. I asked
about licensing it and they wanted a fortune. I tried to negotiate so
much per unit sold and they weren't interested. I was going to have
them built in Mexico and figured they'd be happy for something since
they had absolutely no interest in continuing the product, but they
wanted several thousand. Rule of thumb at that time was if a product
like that sold for $200, actual parts cost including the board was ten
percent, or $20.00. This was back in the early 90s as I recall or
perhaps earlier.
