IN COMMEMORATION OF APRIL 10 AND 11, 2000 STUDENT MASSACRE IN THE GAMBIA:

Ten years have passed since the April 10 and 11 student massacre, yet people of conscience and believers of justice will never forget this historical tragedy. Today again the United States based Gambians’ Movement for Democracy and Development (MDD) a Pro-Democracy, Human Rights and Justice Movement commemorates and mourns the events that happened on April 10 and 11, 2000.

  Several  unarmed, innocent student demonstrators were out to express their grievances in the tortured to death of a fellow student Ebrima Barry and rape of a school girl Binta when security forces confronted them shot and killed 14 students and a Red Cross volunteer in broad daylight. 
Names of the Victims: Reginald Carrol, Karamo Barrow, Lamin Bojang, Ousman Sabally, Sainey Nyabally, Ousman Sembene, Bakary Njie, Claesco Pierra, Momodou Lamin Njie, Wuyea Foday Mansareh, Bamba Jobarteh, Momodou Lamin Chune, Abdoulie Sanyang,  Babucarr Badjie and Omar Barrow.  Others sustained serious injuries and some of them have been maimed for the rest of their lives. 

Section 21 of the Gambia Constitution reads: No person shall be subjected to torture or human degrading punishment or other treatment however, the country is govern by two laws, the military decrees put in place from July 22, 1994 when President Jammeh overthrew the PPP government and the 1997 Constitution. 

It‘s ten years since then and the future of The Gambia and its people continuous to be bleak. President Yahya Jammeh disregards for the Constitution of the country and his no sign of respect for the International Community. On many occasions he has repeated his call for the whole world to go to hell but cannot tell him what to do.


We are here by express our disgust against the cold-blooded murder of these school children and Red Cross Volunteer. We condemn the blanket impunity that the self proclaimed Doctor / professor President Yahya Jammeh accorded to those responsible for committing these heinous serious crimes.

We urge Gambians, and families of those victims to never forgive or forget about this incident and keep in mind justice is on the way. 

We call on all genuine democratic Governments and Human Rights Organizations to come to our aids and take concrete steps to put an end to the continuous terror on Gambians by President Jammeh’s regime.

April 10 today in remembering the atrocities of April 10 and 11, 2000, we take this opportunity to pray for the victims and pledge our solidarity with the families of the victims.
